Galle Face Hotel

The most storied colonial hotel in Sri Lanka, open since 1864

The Galle Face Hotel is the oldest hotel east of Suez still in operation, open continuously since 1864. The long cream-coloured building faces the Indian Ocean across Galle Road, its verandas, high ceilings, and slow ceiling fans maintaining an atmosphere that has changed little since the colonial era. It was genuinely the most luxurious hotel in Asia during the British period, and it remains a remarkable place — not perfectly preserved, but genuinely old and atmospheric.

Even if you're not staying here, come for a drink on the sea-facing terrace at sunset or an afternoon tea. The crab curry at the Verandah restaurant is considered one of the best in Colombo. The renovation debates are ongoing — purists argue against modernisation; the hotel continues to operate as it has for 160 years.

A story
The Galle Face Hotel has hosted everyone from Yuri Gagarin to the Shah of Iran. A set of elephant tusks in the lobby was a gift from a grateful maharajah. The hotel's bar, the Long Bar, is said to have been where a Singapore Sling variant was invented — though Singapore's Raffles Hotel disputes the claim.
