The largest public park in Colombo, Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) sits in the heart of Cinnamon Gardens, bordered by the National Museum to the south and the Town Hall to the north. It is genuinely pleasant — lawned areas shaded by large old trees, a children's playground, a small open-air theatre, and a large seated Buddha statue that replaced a statue of Queen Victoria after independence.
The park is busiest on weekends, when families spread out on the grass and the paths fill with joggers. The surrounding district has some of the best restaurants in Colombo. For a city of its density, Colombo is unusually well-provided with green space in this area.
