Pathirakali Amman Temple

The Pathirakali Amman Temple is a large and active Hindu temple in the centre of Trincomalee dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali. The gopuram (gateway tower) is tall and elaborately decorated with painted figures of deities in the Dravidian style, and the interior courtyards are busy with worshippers throughout the day.

Unlike the Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock, Pathirakali is a town temple embedded in the daily life of Trincomalee's Tamil community. Visiting during puja hours — morning and evening — you get a sense of the religious continuity that has sustained Tamil culture through decades of civil conflict. Non-Hindu visitors are generally welcome to observe and enter the outer courtyards; dress modestly and remove shoes before entering.

A story
Pathirakali Amman (Bhadrakali) is a fierce form of the goddess Kali associated with protection, and the temple is especially active during the Hindu festival of Navaratri, when devotees observe nine nights of prayer and the temple glows with oil lamps and incense smoke until dawn.
