Damascus makes a good base for exploring the surrounding region. Aleppo, Syria's second city, is a full day out but reachable by bus or hired car. Its Great Mosque, the bazaars and the Crusaders' citadel outside town are all worth the trip. Closer to Damascus, the Roman ruins at Bosra lie about 140 km south and can be visited in a long day.
