Alishan Forest Railway

The Alishan Forest Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain railway built during Japanese rule to carry timber from the Alishan forests down to Chiayi. Today it is one of Taiwan's classic rail journeys, known for steep climbs, switchbacks, spirals, and forest scenery.

Even if you only ride part of the line, it gives Chiayi a direct link to Alishan's logging history and mountain landscape. Check current operating sections before planning around it, as weather and repairs can affect service.
