Chiayi is easy to treat as the city before Alishan, but that sells it short. It is a compact southern Taiwanese city with Japanese-era timber history, good local food, and a slower rhythm than Taipei or Taichung. The Alishan Forest Railway still gives the place its strongest travel identity: mountain logging, narrow-gauge engineering, and cypress wood all lead back here.
The most useful part of town for visitors sits between the railway station, Wenhua Road Night Market, and the old timber district around Hinoki Village. East of the centre, Chiayi Park spreads into a quieter green zone with old shrine remains, a botanical garden, and the Sun-Shooting Tower.
Chiayi is not flashy, and that is part of the appeal. Come for turkey rice, old wood, small museums, and the feeling of a working Taiwanese city that has not been smoothed into a weekend resort.
