Chiayi is on Taiwan's western rail corridor. Regular TRA trains stop at Chiayi railway station in the city centre, while the high-speed rail station sits west of town in Taibao and is linked by bus and taxi.
The Alishan Forest Railway starts from Chiayi, though storm damage and repairs have sometimes affected through services. Check the current operating section before planning a same-day mountain trip around it.
