Ko Libong

Large, quiet island with dugong populations and extensive seagrass beds

Ko Libong is the largest and least-visited of Trang's main islands, and the most rewarding for wildlife. The island sits in the middle of a vast seagrass meadow that supports one of Thailand's most important populations of dugong — the shy, rotund sea mammals that resemble manatees and graze the shallows at dawn and dusk. Longtail boats can be hired to look for them; sightings are not guaranteed but are relatively common.

The island's southern coast has mangrove forests and a quiet fishing community. There are a handful of simple guesthouses and resorts; the lack of ATMs and the limited ferry connections are deterrents that keep the crowds away. For a genuinely unhurried experience, Ko Libong is the best of the Trang islands.
