Wat Phra Kaeo was the royal temple of old Kamphaeng Phet, set near the former palace area inside the city walls. The temple had no resident monks; it was used for important state and city ceremonies.
The surviving laterite walls, chedi bases, and Buddha images make this the most important stop in the central zone. The reclining and seated Buddhas are especially good reminders that Kamphaeng Phet was not just a military outpost but part of the same artistic world as Sukhothai.
