Koh Phangan has two personalities. The southern tip around Haad Rin is where the Full Moon Party happens — loud, crowded, and not for everyone. The rest of the island is surprisingly quiet, with dozens of beaches that range from developed to nearly empty.
The best sand is on the north coast. Haad Salad and Haad Yao are wide, swimmable, and backed by a handful of low-key restaurants. Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) on the northeast is reachable only by boat or a steep jungle trail, which keeps the crowds away. Thong Nai Pan, split into two bays, has better accommodation than most northern beaches while still feeling relaxed.
The west coast gets the sunsets, and Ban Tai on the south coast is a long, peaceful stretch that merges with Ban Kai at low tide — a good antidote to Haad Rin's intensity without leaving the south side of the island.
If you want to avoid the party scene entirely, stick to the north and west. Songthaews run along the main roads but many beaches require a motorbike or a boat taxi from Thong Sala pier.
