Chiang Mai is the obvious base for day trips in both directions — 70 kilometres south, 1.5 hours by bus or songthaew. Most visitors come from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao for the day, but the reverse is equally valid if you're based here: a full day in the old city, the Night Bazaar, and back up the valley by evening.
