Haydarpaşa English Cemetery

The Haydarpaşa Cemetery is the British military cemetery established during the Crimean War, where soldiers who died at the Üsküdar hospitals are buried alongside later British and Commonwealth casualties from World War I. The cemetery is run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is kept in exemplary order.

The graves span the 19th and early 20th centuries, and reading the inscriptions is a history of the late British Empire in the Eastern Mediterranean — the Crimea, the Dardanelles, the Mesopotamia campaign. The cemetery is a quiet, dignified place, rarely crowded, with views of the Bosphorus through the trees.

A story
The cemetery was established in 1854 for British soldiers who died during the Crimean War, many of them treated at the Selimiye Barracks hospital nearby. The graves include those of men who survived battle only to die of cholera or typhus in the hospital wards — the same wards where Florence Nightingale was fighting to reduce exactly these deaths. The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is immaculately kept.
