Every Tuesday, Fethiye's centre transforms as hundreds of vendors set up stalls in the streets around the old bazaar quarter. The market is enormous by Turkish coastal standards — several blocks in length, stretching from the harbour area up into the residential streets. It sells everything: fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, cheese, spices, dried herbs, honey, nuts, leather bags, textiles, linen, ceramics, fake designer goods, and every variety of cheap clothing.
Go in the morning for the best produce and the most authentic experience — by midday it gets hot and crowded and the fresh food is picked over. The vegetable stalls near the entrance are where the local women shop; the tourist-oriented stalls selling leather and textiles are further in. Bargaining is acceptable but not mandatory — most stallholders have fixed prices that are already reasonable.
