Kale Mosque (Öküz Mehmet Pasha Mosque)

The Kale Mosque — also called the Öküz Mehmet Pasha Mosque — sits at the centre of the old town and was built in the early seventeenth century by the same vizier who built the caravanserai opposite. It is a classic provincial Ottoman mosque: a single square prayer hall under a low dome, with a slim pencil minaret and a small courtyard.

The mosque is still in use; visitors are welcome outside prayer times, with appropriate dress and shoes removed at the door. The intricately carved wooden minbar (pulpit) and the calligraphy panels around the mihrab are the highlights inside.
