The Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah was begun in 1851 alongside the Kalta Minor by the same khan. It is the largest madrasah in Khiva, with two storeys of student cells arranged around a courtyard, and a grand portal facing the Ata Gate. The decoration is more restrained than the smaller madrassas, perhaps because the budget was diverted into the over-ambitious minaret next door.
The building has been converted into a hotel — the Orient Star — with the student cells acting as guest rooms around the original courtyard. Even if you are not staying, you can walk through the entrance hall and admire the carved wooden doors and the brick portal. The courtyard cafe is a pleasant spot for an afternoon coffee.
