Almost everything to see in Khiva sits inside the walled Ichan Kala, the UNESCO-listed old town. A single combined ticket, sold at any of the four gates, covers most of the museums, mosques and madrassas — it pays back within an hour of touring. The whole walled area is barely 600 metres across, so even an unhurried visit can cover the major sights in a long day. Start at the Kalta Minor by the western Ata Gate, walk through to the Kunya Ark citadel, then loop south to the Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum and the Juma Mosque. Climb the Islam Khoja Minaret in the late afternoon for the best photographs.
