Dorus-Saodat Complex

The Dorus-Saodat, or "Seat of Power," is a mausoleum complex that Timur built to house his family and, eventually, himself. His eldest son Jehangir, who died young in 1376, is buried here, as is his grandson Mohammed Sultan. Timur intended to join them, but fate intervened — he died far from home and was interred in Samarkand.

The complex includes a crypt beneath the main structure, long believed to contain a sarcophagus prepared for Timur. The crypt was excavated in the Soviet era and found to be empty. The main hall above contains the tombs of Jehangir and Mohammed Sultan under a beautifully preserved 15th-century tiled interior.

Adjacent to the Dorus-Saodat is a mosque containing the tomb of a revered 8th-century imam, giving the complex additional religious significance for local visitors. The whole ensemble is quieter and less visited than the Ak-Saray, which makes it easier to spend time with.

A story
Timur planned to be buried here — this was supposed to be his mausoleum. He had already interred his eldest son Jehangir and his grandson Mohammed Sultan in the complex. But when Timur died in 1405 during his campaign toward China, winter made the Takhta-Karacha Pass impassable, and he was buried in Samarkand's Gur-e-Amir instead. The crypt in Shakhrisabz remains empty.
