Nghe Temple

Nghè Temple is a small but elaborate temple complex dedicated to Lê Chân, the second-century military leader regarded as the founder of Haiphong. The current temple was rebuilt in the early twentieth century in the classical Vietnamese style, with curved tile roofs, lacquered red columns, and stone dragons along the entrance pathway.

The temple sits in a green square in the Lê Chân district, with a bronze statue of Lê Chân in the centre. It is a popular spot for offerings, particularly on the lunar calendar's eighth day of the second month, the anniversary of Lê Chân's death. Worth a half-hour visit; the surrounding lanes have several good local cafés.

A story
The temple is dedicated to Lê Chân, a female military commander who led the Trưng Sisters' rebellion against Chinese rule in 40 AD and founded the village that grew into Haiphong. She is one of the most venerated women in Vietnamese history and her statue stands in front of the temple.
