Pasteur Street Brewing

Vietnam's best craft brewery, with pho and durian stout among the seasonal beers

Pasteur Street Brewing Company started in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014 and became the brewery that established craft beer as a serious proposition in Vietnam — partly through quality, partly through the insight of incorporating local ingredients into the beers. Jasmine IPA, Cyclo Pale Ale, and seasonal specials using Vietnamese fruits, spices, and herbs (durian stout, pho-spiced porter) demonstrated that the local ingredient approach could produce genuinely interesting results rather than gimmicky ones. The Hanoi taproom at 1 Au Trieu, a few steps behind St. Joseph's Cathedral, has a terrace and carries the full current lineup.

The beers are significantly more expensive than Hanoi beer or bia hoi, as craft beer inevitably is, but the quality justifies it. The taproom fills with a mix of expats, foreign visitors, and a growing number of Vietnamese craft beer drinkers in the evening. The menu includes food to go with the beer. The location near the cathedral and St. Joseph's neighborhood makes it convenient if you're spending time in that part of the French Quarter.
