Vietnamese Women's Museum

Thoughtful four-floor museum documenting women's history in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Women's Museum at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet stands out in a city full of museums that treat history as a series of battles and political decisions. Four floors document the lives of Vietnamese women from prehistoric times to the present: their roles in agriculture, family, and religion; their participation in the anti-colonial and anti-American wars; the experiences of women from Vietnam's 54 recognized ethnic minorities; and the challenges facing Vietnamese women in contemporary society. The curation is genuinely thoughtful, with original artifacts, oral history recordings, and photographs that give individual lives weight rather than just illustrating abstract themes.

The wartime floor includes personal accounts from female fighters, field medics, and bomb disposal workers alongside their equipment and photographs. The museum doesn't romanticize this; it presents the cost alongside the heroism. The contemporary floor, covering issues like domestic violence, labor rights, and gender equality in a rapidly changing economy, is more unusual for a state museum in Vietnam and more candid than you might expect. Plan an hour and a half. The gift shop has good quality Vietnamese handicrafts at fair prices.
