Day Trips

Hanoi is the launching pad for most of northern Vietnam. Halong Bay and its limestone seascape is the classic trip — realistically an overnight cruise rather than a day trip. Ninh Binh (nicknamed "inland Halong") is easier, closer, and can be done in a long day: karst towers rising out of rice paddies, with rowing-boat trips through the caves at Tam Coc or Trang An. Ba Vi National Park, an hour west by motorbike or hired car, offers cloud forest, French colonial ruins at the summit, and an escape from the city heat. Sapa in the northern mountains takes longer to reach — overnight train to Lao Cai, then a winding road up — but rewards you with trekking and visits to Hmong, Dzao, and Tay villages.
