Hanoi's sights split neatly into three groups. The Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake are where most visitors spend their first day. The Ba Dinh district to the west holds the Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, and One Pillar Pagoda. The French Quarter to the south is worth an afternoon for the Opera House and the handful of museums around it.
