Dark Cave

Dark Cave is the most accessible adventure option in the park and probably the most fun for casual visitors who are not committed cavers. Entry involves a zip line across the river, then a swim and wade through the cave with headlamps, ending in a chamber containing a large mud pool in which visitors are encouraged to wallow before swimming back out.

The experience takes two to three hours and is operated by Phong Nha boat operators in combination with a Phong Nha Cave visit. It is physically undemanding and deliberately playful — good for groups, families, and anyone who wants something wetter and muddier than a standard cave tour. The clay is real mud rather than staged, and the darkness is genuine in the deeper sections.

A story
The mud pool deep in Dark Cave was discovered to have unusual mineral properties and is now marketed as a natural spa, though the appeal is really the absurdity of covering yourself in grey clay in total darkness.
