Son Doong Cave

Son Doong is the largest cave in the world by volume — a fact that only makes sense when you are standing inside it and looking at a jungle growing in the half-light beneath a collapsed ceiling. The main passage runs more than five kilometres, with sections over 200 metres high. The cave contains its own climate: clouds form inside it, and the temperature stays cool while the jungle above bakes.

Access is through Oxalis Adventure Tours, the only operator licensed to run trips. The four-night, five-day expedition involves jungle trekking, river crossings, and sleeping inside the cave on two nights. Numbers are strictly capped — around 1,000 visitors per year. The price reflects the exclusivity: expect to pay upwards of USD 3,000. Book well in advance, often more than a year ahead. If you can afford it, this is one of the genuinely extraordinary travel experiences on earth.

A story
Son Doong was known to local hunters for decades before a British caving expedition made the first full exploration in 2009. Inside, a collapsed ceiling section created a shaft of light that allowed a jungle to grow, complete with its own fog and weather system. The cave is so large that a Boeing 747 could fly through its main passage.
