Phong Nha Cave

The cave that gave the park its name is reached by wooden longtail boat from the village jetty, a thirty-minute ride upstream on the Son River through karst scenery. The boat turns into the cliff face and enters the cave, where the water continues deeper into the mountain through a series of chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, some dramatically lit, others left to the natural darkness.

The river section is about 1.5 kilometres; from the end of the boat ride there is a short walk into the dry cave section. The combination of water, rock formations, and the sheer scale of the chambers makes this an impressive introduction to the park for people who are not planning to attempt the more demanding cave tours. Admission and boat hire are arranged at the jetty; the round trip takes about two hours including boat travel.

A story
The cave was used as a hospital and weapons cache during the American War, its interior providing shelter from B-52 bombing raids. Traces of that period — carved inscriptions and some infrastructure — remain visible in the outer chambers.
