Alega Beach

The village beach is a narrow strip of dark volcanic sand edged by coconut palms, opening onto a sheltered bay. A rope-and-buoy line marks the edge of the channel where the reef drops away sharply — hold it and peer down into the blue at 20 metres of coral wall below. The current at the channel mouth is powerful even on calm days; stay attached to the rope if you go near it.

This is village land. Before entering the water, stop at Tisa's Barefoot Bar at the east end of the beach — she manages access and will tell you whether conditions are safe. Entry is informal but the courtesy matters. Weekdays see few visitors; weekends can bring a handful of day-trippers from Pago Pago.
