Alega is about 10 kilometres east of Pago Pago along Route 1, the main south coast road. The drive from the capital takes around 25–35 minutes depending on traffic, which on Tutuila means the occasional slow truck or village speed bump rather than anything like congestion.
By car or taxi: The simplest option. Car hire is available in Pago Pago from a handful of local operators; taxis are also available and relatively affordable for the distance. There is no formal rank system — ask at your accommodation or call ahead to arrange a driver. A one-way taxi from Pago Pago to Alega costs around USD 20–30.
By aiga bus: Aiga (family) buses — the informal shared minibuses that are the main public transport on Tutuila — run along the south coast road and can drop you near Alega. Buses originate at the main market in Fagatogo and run most mornings. The system has no fixed schedule and minimal signage; ask locals at the market which bus serves the east coast road. The fare is a few dollars. Buses do not run on Sundays.
Arriving by air: The international airport at Tafuna (Pago Pago International Airport) is on the south-west of Tutuila, roughly 30–40 minutes from Alega by car. There is no airport bus; take a taxi or arrange a hire car.
Note that there is no direct connection from the ferry wharf — the inter-island ferry to Apia in independent Samoa docks in Pago Pago, not near Alega.
