Alega Reef Snorkeling

The reef running along the bay holds some of the best snorkeling on Tutuila. The shallow inner section is safe for beginners: coral heads rise close to the surface, and reef fish — parrotfish, surgeonfish, triggerfish — are dense enough to be genuinely surprising. Moving toward the channel, the coral wall drops steeply and the fish grow larger. Reef sharks patrol the deeper water; sightings are frequent in clear conditions and not cause for alarm unless you're trailing bait.

Bring your own mask and fins — there is no rental equipment in Alega. The snorkeling gear shops in Pago Pago (about 10 km west) can sort you out before you come.

story: "The Samoan word for the reef crest — faleolo — literally means 'house of the reef.' Samoans have fished and dived these waters for over 3,000 years, using traditional fish traps and nets whose basic design has not changed since first settlement."
