National Park of American Samoa — Tutuila Unit

The Tutuila unit of the National Park of American Samoa covers the north coast around Fagasa and Amalau Valley, a short drive from Alega over the interior ridge. This is old-growth tropical rainforest: fig trees with enormous buttress roots, flying foxes (Samoan fruit bats, a traditional delicacy) roosting in the canopy, and a coastline of black cliffs and isolated coves. The coral reef in front of the park is part of the same protected system.

Trails are maintained from the village of Afono on the north coast. The Tutuila Coastal Trail offers views back over both coasts on a clear day. The park visitor centre is in Pago Pago and has maps and current trail conditions.
