Billabong Zoo is a privately run wildlife park that focuses on native Australian species — kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, dingoes, reptiles, and birds. The attraction for families is the chance to move among semi-tame animals: kangaroos and wallabies roam freely through much of the park and will approach visitors looking for food.
The zoo also keeps crocodiles, various snake species, and lizards in dedicated enclosures, as well as a selection of exotic birds. Keeper talks run throughout the day on different species, and animal encounters (including holding a wombat or interacting with cheetahs) can be booked in advance.
It is a full half-day outing, and well set up for children. The park is a few kilometres north of the town centre, easily reached by car. Weekday visits are considerably quieter than weekends and school holidays.
