Port Macquarie sits at the mouth of the Hastings River on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, roughly halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. It began as a penal settlement in 1821 and has grown into a popular holiday town, particularly with families and retirees drawn by the beaches and mild climate.
The town has a string of excellent beaches — Town Beach, Flynns Beach, and Lighthouse Beach are all within easy reach of the centre. The coastal walk from Town Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse is a good way to see them all, with views along the coast and chances to spot dolphins.
The Koala Hospital on Lord Street is a unique draw — it cares for sick and injured koalas and is open to visitors daily, with a free guided tour at 3pm. The Billabong Zoo and the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre (a boardwalk through coastal rainforest) are also worth a visit.
