The Courthouse, known to everyone as "the Courty", is the archetypal Newtown pub: a no-frills corner hotel a block back from King Street that draws an easy mix of students, locals, tradies and the inner-west's full social spectrum. There are no pokies and no pretension — just cold beer, a good beer garden, a pool table and a kitchen turning out solid pub meals. It has been a neighbourhood local for generations and remains the place people name when they want a relaxed, unpolished drink.
It sits opposite Newtown's leafy Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, and the back courtyard fills fast on warm afternoons.
