Sydney

Harbour city of beaches, ferries, and sandstone headlands around Australia's most recognisable waterfront.

Sydney is built around one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world, and that harbour shapes everything about the city. The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are the famous landmarks, but the real pleasure is in how water threads through daily life here — ferries crisscrossing the harbour, coastal walks connecting beach after beach, and that particular quality of light bouncing off the Pacific.

The city sprawls, but the parts that matter to visitors are fairly compact. The CBD, Circular Quay and The Rocks sit on the south shore of the harbour. Cross the bridge or take a ferry and you reach the leafy North Shore and Manly. Head east and you hit the string of ocean beaches from Bondi to Coogee — connected by the famous coastal walk. The inner-city districts have the best eating and nightlife: Surry Hills for restaurants and bars, Darlinghurst for Oxford Street's queer nightlife, Paddington for Victorian terraces and Saturday markets, and west of the centre, Newtown for King Street's countercultural mix of vintage shops, vegan kitchens and live music.

Sydney is genuinely multicultural and that shows most clearly in its food. Chinatown around Haymarket is excellent, the Vietnamese restaurants on King Street in Newtown are outstanding, and the seafood at the Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont is superb — worth a visit even if you are not cooking.

The Royal Botanic Garden is free, 30 hectares, and on the harbour. The Art Gallery of NSW — also free for the permanent collection — holds one of the world's most significant First Nations art collections. The climate is mild year-round but Sydney is at its best in the southern spring and autumn (September to November and March to May).

Local tip

Sydney is a harbour city, so get on the water — the Manly ferry is the best-value harbour cruise on Earth for the price of a bus ticket. Climb the Harbour Bridge, or just walk across it for free. Bondi is famous but crowded; the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee beats lying on the sand.
