Capitol Theatre

Lavishly restored 1920s atmospheric theatre for big musicals

Address 13 Campbell Street, Haymarket

The Capitol is Sydney's grand lyric theatre, a 1928 picture palace built in the "atmospheric" style — its auditorium designed to feel like an open-air Florentine garden at twilight, complete with a domed ceiling studded with twinkling stars and silhouetted classical statues around the walls. After decades of decline it was restored in the 1990s and now stages the city's largest touring musicals and concerts.

There is nothing to see inside outside of show times, but if a production is on it is worth a ticket as much for the room as the performance. It sits on the edge of Chinatown, making a pre-theatre dumpling dinner an easy plan.
