El Alamein Fountain is the spiky, dandelion-like fountain in Kings Cross, built as a memorial to Australian soldiers who fought in the North African campaigns of World War II. Its design was widely copied, but the original still has the most presence: water beads and sprays from a metal sphere above Fitzroy Gardens.
It is a quick stop rather than a destination on its own, but it works well as a marker for the old Kings Cross nightlife district and the edge of Darlinghurst.
