Sydney Fish Market

The Sydney Fish Market at Pyrmont is the second-largest seafood market in the world by variety, after Tokyo's Tsukiji. Unlike Tsukiji's wholesale operation, Sydney's is partly retail and partly a place to eat, with several seafood restaurants, a sushi bar and a fish-and-chips counter all operating within the market building. The freshness of the produce — Balmain bugs, Sydney rock oysters, barramundi, king prawns and whatever is in season — is exceptional.

Go for a late breakfast or early lunch. Buy a dozen oysters and a bottle of local white wine from the bottle shop inside and find a table on the waterside deck. It's that simple and that good. The market runs a Dutch auction for wholesale buyers early each morning (observers can watch from a gallery), and the retail stalls open from around 7am. The market is a 20-minute walk from Darling Harbour or a short trip on the light rail.
