When to Go

Bundaberg sits just south of the Tropic of Capricorn and has the standard sub-tropical Queensland weather: warm winters, hot humid summers, most of the rain falling between January and March.

The turtle nesting season at Mon Repos runs from mid-November to late March. Nesting females come ashore from November to January; hatchlings emerge from January to March. December and January are the busiest tourist months — book Mon Repos tours well ahead.

Winter (June–August) is the most comfortable for general sightseeing — temperatures in the low 20s°C, dry, and Lady Elliot Island is at its best for manta rays. The hot, wet summer is the time for turtles and swimming but not for inland walks. Cyclones occasionally reach this far south, mostly January through March.
