Horn Island

Torres Strait island with Kaurareg history, World War II sites, and the region's main airport.

Horn Island, also known as Ngurupai or Narupai, is one of the Torres Strait Islands off the tip of Cape York. Most travellers first see it as the airport island for Thursday Island, but it has a sharper story than that suggests: Kaurareg country, gold mining, pearling, and one of Australia's most important northern World War II airfields.

The island is small and dry-season visits can fit into half a day, but the history is dense. The Torres Strait Heritage Museum is the essential stop, and local tours link it with old airfield remains, slit trenches, crash sites, and memorials scattered through the bush. After Darwin, Horn Island was one of the most heavily bombed places in Australia during World War II.

Horn is also a practical base. Flights from Cairns land here, ferries connect across to Thursday Island, and the wharf area has the island's limited food and drink options. Come for the war history and Torres Strait context, not for beaches or resort life.

Getting There

Horn Island Airport is the main air gateway to the Torres Strait, with flights from Cairns and connections onward through the islands. Ferries and transfer buses link the airport and wharf with Thursday Island across the Ellis Channel.
