Yowah

Tiny outback Queensland opal field known for Yowah nut opals and artesian water

Yowah is a speck of an opal town in far western Queensland, far enough from the coast that the horizon starts to feel like the main street. It is not a service stop with a few curiosities attached. The point of coming is the opal field itself, especially the ironstone nodules known as Yowah nuts.

The town works for travellers who like small, strange places with one strong story. You can fossick at the public field, talk opals in the galleries, and drive out to The Bluff for the sudden view over flat country. The artesian pools add the classic outback reward: hot mineral water after dust and driving.

Yowah is remote, dry, and quiet outside the winter visitor season. Bring fuel, water, and patience, and treat it as an outback detour rather than a casual side trip from the coast.

Things to Do

Yowah's appeal is the opal field: fossicking, miner-run galleries, the outback view from the bluff, and the artesian pools on the edge of town.
