Emmaville

Small New England mining village with tin history, gem fossicking, and granite-country bush drives.

Australia and Pacific > Australia > New South Wales > Emmaville

Emmaville is a small village in the New England highlands of northern New South Wales. It began as Vegetable Creek, a tin-mining settlement supplied by Chinese market gardens, and later took on the calmer name it uses today.

The mining has mostly gone, leaving a quiet main street, old pubs, dry high-country air, and a strong local interest in minerals and fossicking. This is not a place of big sights, but it has a real story: tin, arsenic, gemstones, and the hard practical life of a small inland town.

Emmaville works best as a detour from Glen Innes or Tenterfield, especially if you are interested in mining history or the granite country around Torrington. Bring a car, fuel, and a little patience; public transport is thin and services are limited.
