Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails

Blue Derby is the headline-grabbing trail network 50 minutes inland from St Helens, in the old tin-mining village of Derby. The trails are world-class — flowing single-track through dense temperate rainforest, with everything from gentle green-rated loops to technical black descents. Most riders use Derby as a base, but St Helens works as an alternative with the bonus of the coast.

Hire a shuttle to ride the longer point-to-point trails (Blue Tier descends from a 800-metre ridge to the coastal plain near Pyengana). Bike rental and shuttle bookings are best made at Vertigo MTB or Blue Derby Pods Ride. Allow at least two days to do the network justice.

A story
When the tin mine at Derby closed in the 1950s the village collapsed; by 2010 the population was under 200 and the school had shut. The 125-kilometre mountain-bike trail network, built in 2015 by the local council and the Tasmanian government, has reversed all of that — Derby now hosts a round of the Enduro World Series and supports more cafés and bike shops than its old population could sustain.
