Eating Out

St Helens has a small but increasingly serious eating scene, driven by the bike crowd at Blue Derby and the steady summer trade from the coast. The main street has the heaviest concentration; Binalong Bay and Pyengana have a couple of standouts.

Sea Salt and Soda on Quail Street has been the local favourite for casual sit-down meals — fresh seafood, brunch, decent coffee. Captains Catch on the wharf cooks the day's flathead and scallops; eat on the deck overlooking the boat ramp. For oysters, Pure Tasmania on the bay shore sells direct from the lease at off-market prices. At Binalong Bay, the Bay of Fires Bistro has the best dinner table on the coast (book ahead in season).
