Eddystone Point Lighthouse

Eddystone Point marks the northern end of the Bay of Fires, in the Mount William National Park. The pink-granite lighthouse stands on a low headland of bleached, lichen-stained boulders, with surf beaches running south and north and almost no other development for kilometres in either direction.

The drive from St Helens takes around 90 minutes; the last stretch is unsealed but well-graded. The park has free camping at Stumpys Bay and Picnic Rocks. Bring everything you need — there are no shops, no fuel, often no phone signal.

A story
The 35-metre Eddystone Point lighthouse was built in 1889 from pink granite quarried within sight of its base, and is one of only two pink-granite lighthouses in Australia. Its light still rotates every five seconds; the station was automated and the keepers withdrawn in 1992.
