North-East Tasmania

Sparse Tasmanian region of Tamar Valley vineyards, Ben Lomond highlands, and rugged coast near St Helens.

The north-eastern corner of Tasmania is one of the less visited parts of the state, but that is more a reflection of its sparse population than a lack of things to do. The area takes in the Tamar Valley wine region, Ben Lomond National Park (Tasmania's main skiing destination), and a rugged coastline running from St Helens to Georgetown.

Offshore, Flinders Island and Cape Barren Island are rich in both history and wilderness — Flinders in particular is worth the trip for its empty beaches, bushwalking, and the remains of the Wybalenna settlement where Aboriginal Tasmanians were confined in the 1830s.

The north-east can be approached from several directions: up the east coast from Hobart via St Helens, inland from Launceston towards Ben Lomond, or north from Launceston to Georgetown and the coast.
