A shallow tidal lagoon on the western edge of town, listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international significance — the only one of Tasmania's ten Ramsar sites that sits within an urban area. The lagoon is important habitat for migratory shorebirds, including sharp-tailed sandpipers and red-necked stints that arrive from the northern hemisphere between September and April. There's a viewing area off the Tasman Highway where you can scan the mudflats without disturbing the birds.
