When to Go

Sorell is on the relatively dry, sheltered south-east coast of Tasmania, and the climate is milder than the Hobart side of the channel. Summer (December–February) is warm, dry, and the best season for the surrounding beaches and the surrounding bushland; daytime temperatures rarely exceed 25°C and evenings cool quickly.

Spring and autumn are pleasant, with crisp mornings and long sunny afternoons; spring (September–November) is also the start of the migratory shorebird season at Orielton Lagoon, when sandpipers and stints arrive from the northern hemisphere. Winter is cool and grey, with occasional frost, but rarely properly cold; the surrounding bushland looks dramatic in winter light.

The Sorell Fruit Farm is open from mid-October to early May for picking — strawberries peak in November and December, stone fruit through January, blackberries and tayberries into late summer.
