Seven Mile Beach

Long surf beach 20 minutes west of Sorell, backed by pine reserve

Seven Mile Beach is the closest proper surf beach to Sorell, about 20 minutes west by road. The name is a small exaggeration — the strand is actually about 11 km from end to end — but it is a fine stretch of pale sand backed by a state recreation area of coastal pines, and a popular spot for Hobart families on summer weekends.

The water is cool, clean, and never particularly crowded; surfing conditions are modest, swimming is straightforward. The pine reserve behind the beach has shaded picnic tables, a children's playground, and quiet walking tracks. Hobart Airport sits at the western end of the bay, so the only background noise is the occasional small turboprop. A useful break on the way back from Sorell into the city, or as a half-day trip out of Sorell itself.
