King and Godfree

Restored 1884 Italian grocer with rooftop bar and ground-floor wine cellar

King and Godfree has been the Italian grocer of Lygon Street since 1884 — at the time the oldest licensed grocery in Victoria — and was reopened in 2019 after a multi-year restoration that turned the block into a three-storey hospitality precinct: the original grocer downstairs, the Agostino restaurant on the first floor, and the Johnny's Green Room rooftop cocktail bar on top.

The food is contemporary Italian at the high end of the strip — slow-cooked ragùs, house-made pasta, an extensive Italian wine list — and the building itself is worth visiting for the restoration alone. Reserve for dinner; the rooftop is walk-in for drinks.
