Things to Do

Carlton's headline attractions sit at the eastern edge of the suburb in the Carlton Gardens — the UNESCO-listed Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Museum, both worth at least half a day. From there it is a five-minute walk west to Lygon Street, the spine of the Italian quarter, with its restaurants, gelaterias, the Carlton Moviehouse cinema and La Mama Theatre. The University of Melbourne campus, opening off Grattan Street at the south-western edge of Carlton, is a green and walkable detour with the Ian Potter Museum of Art and several Victorian-era buildings.
