Pram Factory (former)

The 1970s home of Australian theatre's new wave, now a shopping arcade

The Pram Factory on Drummond Street was the home of the Australian Performing Group from 1970 to 1981, the venue where the new wave of Australian theatre took up residence after outgrowing La Mama. Almost every important Australian playwright and theatre maker of the 1970s passed through its doors. The building was a converted pram and toy factory — three storeys of brick warehouse with chaotic rehearsal rooms and a 400-seat main theatre cobbled together inside.

It was demolished in 1981 against a long-running save-the-Pram-Factory campaign, replaced by a supermarket and a small arcade that occupies the site today. A heritage plaque on the building marks what was lost. The site retains symbolic importance to the city's theatre community.

A story
The Australian Performing Group occupied the old Pram Factory on Drummond Street from 1970 to 1981, premiering the work of David Williamson, Jack Hibberd, John Romeril and Helen Garner. The building was demolished in 1981 to make way for a Safeway and a small arcade — the most controversial heritage loss in Carlton's history.
